Monthly Coffee and Camaraderie

  • Tuckahoe Clubhouse (map)

The HSW Coffee and Comradery next Wednesday (September 20) will introduce one of the JABA (Jefferson Area Board of Aging) experts to Here to Stay in Wintergreen's members and volunteers. JABA is key to successfully aging in place. This program on Patients’ Rights will also be a solid, real-world look at JABA.

The speaker will be JABA's Tamar Goodale. For seven years now she has served as the state's ombudsman for Charlottesville as well as Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties. Tamar received a Juris Doctor from the William and Mary School of Law; her LinkedIn page says she worked on "patient rights" at UVA. The word "expert" describes her well.

She will answer questions on how she can help if you think your rights in a hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility are being ignored. She will also discuss at our meeting how a family member can be an advocate for a loved one in a care facility. (There are differences in resident rights in nursing homes vs. assisted living facilities.)

Tamar will also touch on the basics of patient rights regarding discharge from a hospital.

No doubt some members here will want to hear her talk about shopping for long-term care, including where to find what is available in this area.

This powerful meeting for our members and volunteers will be at Tuckahoe Clubhouse next Wednesday, September 20, at 10 am.  RSVP by emailing Mary Russell at mountainmuse47@gmail.com.
